How To Operate a John Deere X390
Product Features
Built To Perform
25.5 HP Kawasaki FR730V — the biggest engine in the X300 lineup
Commercial-grade Kawasaki FR-series V-Twin paired with John Deere's iTorque™ system delivers 23 hp of pulling power. Extra headroom for tall grass, hills, and heavy attachments — with consistent RPM at the deck for a beautiful, level cut every pass.
48-in. Accel Deep™ Mower Deck with optional MulchControl™
Premium Powertrain turns inside a standard tight-turn radius — hug every tree, hydrant, and flower bed without leaving strips. The 48-in. Accel Deep™ stamped-steel deck also cuts your mow time by ~14% versus a 42-in. deck. One-touch MulchControl™ (optional) lets you flip between mulching, side discharge, and bagging modes on the fly — a beautiful lawn, fewer fertilizer needs, no clippings on driveways.
K66 Hydrostatic Transaxle · Twin Touch™ pedals · Cruise Control
Heavy-duty K66 Tuff Torq® hydrostatic transaxle with an oil cooler stays cool under load. Twin Touch™ pedals for effortless forward/reverse without shifting, cruise control for long straightaways, and an 18-in. high-back adjustable-suspension seat for all-day comfort.
Mow, mulch, haul, and bag through spring, summer, and fall — then tackle winter with a front blade or 44-in. snow blower for easy snow removal. A single tractor that works every season, backed by a 4-year / 300-hour bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Best mower I've owned!
Just upgraded to the X390 this spring and I gotta say, it's a real joy to use. My old mower was a pain, but this one with the 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine just flies through my 2-acre yard. The 48" Accel Deep deck gives such a clean cut, makes the lawn look like a golf course. And that K66 hydro transmission? Smooth as butter. Easy to maneuver around the trees and flower beds. Couldn't be happier with this purchase. Worth every penny for the quality.

Makes quick work of my property
I've got about 3 acres, mostly flat, and the X390 has been a consistent performer. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine has plenty of power, even when the grass gets a little thick after a good rain. Love the hydraulic deck lift, it's so much easier than my old manual lever, especially when I need to clear some debris or adjust height on the fly. The 48" Accel Deep deck does a fantastic job distributing clippings evenly. John Deere quality shines through.

Comfortable and powerful
After retiring, I wanted a mower that was easy on the back and reliable. The X390 fits the bill perfectly. The K66 hydro transmission is so smooth, no jerky movements, which is great on my hilly property. And the hydraulic deck lift is a game-changer for me; no more straining to raise or lower the deck. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine starts right up every time. My 1.5 acres look great and I'm not wiped out afterward. Highly recommend it.

Good for my medium-sized yard
I have about an acre with some slopes and the X390 handles it well. The K66 hydro makes it easy to control going up and down the inclines. I like the 48" Accel Deep deck, it covers a good amount of ground quickly. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine has plenty of get-up-and-go. My only little gripe is it's a bit bigger than my old one, so storing it is a bit tighter. But the cut quality is excellent and it feels very sturdy.

Built like a tank, cuts like a dream
I'm a contractor, so I appreciate good engineering. This X390 for my own 2-acre home is fantastic. The K66 hydro is seriously robust, you can feel the quality. The 48" Accel Deep deck mulches really well, even when the grass is a bit damp. And the 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine is a workhorse, always reliable. The hydraulic deck lift is super convenient. It's an investment, but it's clearly built to last for years. Very impressed.

Dependable and robust
Got this X390 a couple years back for my 4-acre property, which includes a lot of open lawn around the farm buildings. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki is a real beast and handles everything I throw at it. The 48" Accel Deep deck is great for getting through the thicker stuff without clumping. That K66 hydro transmission is solid, makes long mowing sessions comfortable. It's been absolutely dependable, starts up every spring like clockwork. John Deere hasn't let me down.

The K66 hydro makes steering and speed control effortless around my flower beds. My half-acre property always looks perfect after using the 48" Accel Deep deck. Premium ride, professional cut
As someone who appreciates quality engineering, the X390 is impressive. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine is smooth and powerful, much quieter than my old machine. The K66 hydro transmission provides excellent control and a comfortable ride over my 1.75 acres. The 48" Accel Deep deck truly produces a professional-looking cut every time, even with all the different types of grass in Texas. The hydraulic deck lift is a thoughtful feature that adds to the user experience.

Handles my slopes with ease
Living in Colorado, I've got some slopes on my 2.5-acre property. The X390 handles them like a champ thanks to that K66 hydro transmission. It feels very stable and has plenty of traction. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine never bogs down, even when the grass is thick. And the hydraulic deck lift is super convenient for raising the deck over rocks or uneven terrain. The 48" Accel Deep deck leaves a beautiful, even cut. Solid reliability.

Great mower, few minor quibbles
The X390 is a fantastic machine for my 1.5 acres. The 48" Accel Deep deck does an outstanding job with the cut quality, and the 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine has tons of power. I really appreciate the hydraulic deck lift, my back certainly does. The K66 hydro is very smooth. My only small complaint is the turning radius isn't quite as tight as my old zero-turn, but that's a different class of machine. Overall, a very solid and reliable mower.

Weekend warrior's dream
With three kids, my time is precious. The X390 helps me get my 1.2-acre lawn done quickly and well. The 48" Accel Deep deck cuts a wide swath, and the 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine is powerful enough to handle the thick Georgia grass. The K66 hydro makes it easy for anyone to operate, and the hydraulic deck lift is fantastic when I need to clear toys or obstacles. It's a joy to mow with, not a chore. Highly recommend for busy homeowners.

I have a little over an acre, and the X390 does a great job. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine is powerful, and the 48" Accel Deep deck cuts very nicely. I really like the hydraulic deck lift, it's so much easier than my old mower. The K66 hydro transmission makes it simple to drive. Great mower, a bit pricey
The X390 is a powerhouse for my 1.3-acre lot. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine means it never struggles, and the 48" Accel Deep deck gives a perfect, even cut. I love the hydraulic deck lift – makes life so much easier. The K66 hydro is definitely a premium transmission. 48-inch deck cuts a huge amount of time
The width difference over the 42-inch decks is real. On 4 acres, that's 20+ minutes saved per mow. Add the Kawasaki 25.5 HP and this thing is unstoppable.

Cut quality is the reason I'd buy it again
Third season on the X390 and the finish is still dealership quality. Even in thick spring growth it lays the grass over cleanly in one pass instead of leaving stragglers I have to go back over.

Comfortable enough for a two-hour mow
The seat and control layout on the X390 are genuinely well designed. I do about two hours at a stretch and get off without a sore back, which was never true of my old machine.

Better value than the box-store brands
I shopped the orange and red brands first. For the build quality and warranty, the X390 was the easy call — and Deere resale value is in a completely different league when you go to sell.
